Winter Ready

As the temperatures begin to drop and it gets closer to winter, it is important to know how to dress you and your family so that everyone stays safe and warm! There are studies that show that being in nature can lift our spirits and lead to healthier lifestyles, but this can’t be done without appropriate winter wear. When dressing for winter, there are three Ws that you should remember: wicking, warmth, and wind. Dressing in layers is important, especially for cold weather.

  • The first layer you wear should be wicking. This layer will help keep you dry and warm when you are exposed to extreme weather conditions. Look for polyester or wool blends rather than cotton for this layer.
  • Your second layer you wear should add warmth. Something puffy and insulating, like a wool sweater or a hoodie, will help you retain your body heat.
  • Finally, your third layer should help break the wind. A winter coat will do the trick for this, as well as a wind breaker or a rain jacket.

These three Ws are a great start for preparing for the winter weather, however, it does not always need to be that exact order. In some cases, you may need to add or remove layers depending on the conditions. Listen to your body and do what is right for you!

PRO TIP: In addition to the three Ws, remember to keep your head, hands, and feet warm as well. Wool hats, fleece gloves, and boots with thick socks are a great place to start to keep your extremities warm.
