A Skele-TON of Fun

A skeleton isn’t just an awesome Halloween costume. Your skeleton is a collection of bones that work together to give your body structure and shape.A Skele-Ton of Fun

We have 206 bones in our bodies, each one with a unique function and purpose. Bones help us move and they also support our muscles and organs.  There are two types of bones: Axial and Appendicular.

  1. Axial bones are in the axis, or core, part of your body.  They include your skull, ribs, and spine.
  2. Appendicular bones are the rest of them! They include your arms, legs, fingers, and toes.

Axial and Appendicular Bones

Bones become stronger with exercise and movement.  You can build a strong skeleton through weight-bearing movements like walking, jumping, climbing stairs, or dancing.  In fact, just walking around your neighborhood trick-or-treating can help build your skeleton!

Try our challenge this month by Suiting Up The Skeleton!  Print the worksheet and draw your costume over the skeleton.  Have a Skele-TON of FUN, and return to your local Hy-Vee customer service for a prize!
